PROCEDURE
I.
INTRODUCTION
1.
Greeting
2.
Warm up
Look at the
screen, please. (Slide 1)
What is the
theme of our lesson?
Why do you
think so?
Really our
theme today is “Earth Is Our Home”.
How do you
think what we shall speak about?
Think over
our epigraph: (Slide 2)
Do you agree with it? Why?
3.
Aims (Slide
3)
During the
lesson you’ll:
•
discuss some questions on the topic;
•
get some new information;
•
work in groups;
•
do some tasks;
•
do the projects;
•
listen to the song.
4. Motivation (Slide 4)
After the lesson you’ll be
able to
•
speak about different environmental problems and the ways of their
solving;
•
know what we can do to save our planet ;
•
understand how it is important to live in harmony with nature;
•
do everything you can to avoid the pollution on the local and global levels.
II.
MAIN PART
1.
Vocabulary (Slide 5)
Let’s see what words we shall use during the lesson.
Some of them are known for you and some are not.
v Pollution – the contamination of the environment by substances
harmful to living creations.
v Recycle – make new things from different kinds of litter.
v Litter,
trash, waste, rubbish, garbage -
things that you throw away, such as empty bottles, used papers, food that has
gone bad etc.
v Rainforest – rich woodland which occurs in warm climate and high
rainfalls regions.
v Destroy - to damage something so badly that it no longer
exists or cannot be used or repaired.
v Poacher – a man who kills animals illegally.
v Arson - the crime of deliberately making something burn.
v Distress - a situation when smth is in danger and needs help.
v Deforestation - the cutting or burning down of all the trees in an area.
Please, write down these words in your vocabularies.
2.
Brainstorming
How do you
think what problem is the main in the row of environmental problems? (Slide 6)
Pollution is one of the most serious problems of our environment. Our planet suffers from different kinds of pollutions. Look at the screen and name some of them. Use pictures to activate your brain. (Pupils name kinds of pollution according to the pictures and then check up answers with slide 7.)
3.
Discussion
Now I want
you to look at these pictures on the screen. Please, say what you can see on
the picture and what kind of pollution it is. (Slides 8-11)
Now let’s
talk about some kinds of pollution. Please note information to your copybooks
while listening. Look at the screen.
(Slide 12)
One of the
tips for us to shorten air pollution is changing the way of travelling. Use
bikes or electric cars or walk if it is possible.
(Slide 13)
Another way of protecting our
environment is using alternative natural energy resources:
v Solar energy
v Hydropower energy
v Geothermal energy
v Wind energy
v Biomass energy
(Slide 14)
Recycling
is really good way to keep our planet more clean, to save energy and natural
resources.
v Most types of plastic
are recyclable.
v Papers make up 40-50% of landfill space instead of being recycled.
v Glass can be recycled or reused
over and over again.
v Old clothes can be reused as rags or
for art projects.
v Old wood can be reused, fixed and
given away or used as fuel for fireplace.
v Aluminum is easy to recycle and make
into new things.
v Tin can be recycled and quickly
made into new things.
v Trash: some things are not
recyclable but they make up a small percentage of what is thrown away.
(Slide 15)
After you
sort your waste for recycling it’ll be very little to throw away. The greater
part of your waste will be recycled.
(Slide 16)
Mother Theresa said “If every person swept
their own door-step, the whole world would be clean.” So everybody can do
something for our planet. Clean up your home, around your home, around your
school. You’ll see it is great!
Now answer my question. Have you ever seen the
night sky above London? I suppose no because I haven’t. But you’ll see it due
to the modern technology. Surfing the Internet I’ve found the British site
about light pollution. Look! Here we have night sky simulator which can show us
the results of light pollution in GB. Put the arrow in any place of the map of
UK and you’ll see the night sky of that region. For example I put arrow far
from land in the sea. The sky is really dark; we can see a lot of stars and Milky
Way very clearly. Now I put it above the Highlands where there are no big
cities. The sky is lighter but we can see the stars clearly too. Pay attention
to the figures above the picture. 5 stars and figure 8 stands for full
darkness, less number of stars shows the higher level of light pollution. Now
we are in the centre of London. What do you see? We can’t see stars or Milky
Way but now we can see the plane flying above our heads! It is not normal for
people, animals and plants: people are tired of around-the-clock lightning,
animals suffer because they couldn’t orient if it is day or night, and plants
don’t produce oxygen.
I want to show you once more simulator which
illustrate the influence of light pollution for birds. If we put some globe
light fixtures along the street we can hear that birds don’t sleep but sing as if it was a day! What
should we do then? We need our street to be lit. We can put the light postures
which would be full cut-off lights. We have to provide electric street-lighting
but we haven’t to illuminate the sky!
Now let’s
think what we should do ourselves to avoid or to shorten pollution around us.
Is it really possible?
1)
Using
bicycles instead of cars;
2)
Recycling;
3)
Using
alternative natural energy resources;
4)
Tidying up
our homes, yards, school territory, beaches and streets
5)
Rational
illuminating of our streets.
4.
Listening
Now we know
what we should do for our planet on the local level. But we can’t solve all
environmental problems on the global level. Many people in the world try to do
as much as possible to save our planet. One of such persons was world famous
American pop-singer Michael Jackson.
Listen to “Earth Song” devoted to the global environmental problems
written by him. I’ll give you worksheets with lyrics of this song. But there
are gaps in them. While listening you have to write down missed words. Try to
understand what this song is about. Pay attention to the words which may be
unknown for you.
v
Gain - to
obtain or achieve something you want or need.
v
Weep - to cry,
especially because you feel very sad.
v
Pledge -
to make a formal promise that you will do something.
v
Glance -
to quickly look at someone or something.
v
Beyond -
on or to the further side of something.
v
Drift - to
move, change, or do something without any plan or purpose.
(Slide 19)
(Pupils
listen to the first part of the song, fill in the gaps. Then they check up
their answers on the screen.)
You’ve
listened to only the first part of the song. Now you’ll listen to the full
version of it but this time you can watch video made for this song. Please be
attentive while watching, try to notice every shot and then we’ll discuss the
problems which are shown in the video clip.
(Pupils
watch video clip “Earth Song”, then discuss it)
What environmental problems have you seen in the video
clip?
1)
Deforestation
as a result of cutting and forest fires;
2)
Killing
animals by poachers;
3)
Wars;
4)
Industrial
pollutions.
I’ve got
some information about facts of shooting this video. I think it will be
interesting for you to learn about it. (Slide 20)
The “Earth Song”
music video was shot on four continents, all of which are in some form of
distress created by man and his technology.
Locations include: (Slide 21)
Locations include: (Slide 21)
The Amazon Rainforest
A large part of this forest, as seen in this video no longer exists. It was destined to be totally destroyed within a week of this video shoot. The people featured here are native to the region and are not professional actors.

Tanzania
This footage includes Masai in their own village. No animals were harmed in any way during the making of this music video. Stock footage of the actual inhumane treatment of animals was acquired from documentary archives. It should be noted that while filming was in progress an African elephant (not pictured in the video) was killed by poachers within miles of the shot.

5.
Group work (making projects)
Now let’s
organize four groups for making projects. I need one representative from each
group to choose the picture from the backboard. Each group has to write down
the list of recommendations for people what they can do to avoid problems illustrated
by the pictures. You can decorate your sheet if you like. While making your
projects you may listen to the sounds of nature. May be they will inspire you
and you can relax a little. (Slides 25-41)
